What We Do

PATHS2 is currently working in five states: Enugu, Jigawa, Lagos, Kaduna and Kano, with various stakeholders towards the overall goal of ensuring that ‘Nigeria’s own resources are efficiently and effectively used to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)’.

PATHS2 is one of the four of State-Led Programmes (SLPs) developed by DFID which include Strengthening Accountability and Voice Initiative (SAVI),Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN), and State Programme for Accountability Responsiveness and Capability (SPARC).

Partnership for Transforming Health Systems Phase II (PATHS2) is a six year national programme funded by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) to strengthen Nigeria’s health system.  PATHS2 seeks to contribute to effective and efficient use of Nigeria’s resources to achieve the health related Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5.

Our Purpose

PATHS2 is working to improve planning, financing and delivery of sustainable and replicable pro-poor health services for common health problems in five states in Nigeria – Enugu, Jigawa, Lagos, Kaduna, and Kano.  By influencing and changing processes of health systems governance at federal and state level and encouraging citizen engagement and participation, PATHS2 is successfully improving health outcomes for the poor and socially excluded in its five focal states.

PATHS2 works to achieve:

»Better Public Health Care services across the country, including rural clinics to support pregnant mothers and provide immunisation to children

»Emphasis on preventive rather than curative health care to ensure people are better prepared to fight disease and illness

»More training of staff and new incentive packages to retain doctors and nurses in the poorest areas

»Faster and better managed flow of drugs across all states – at the right place, at the right time and in the right quantity

»Better government planning and management, ensuring that money is spent where health needs are greatest
